Observation on Teacher

Planning for Teaching

From my observation, my mentor planned well every lesson she will teach. It is evident with the teaching plans she had presented to me. It was holistically planned and was checked by the head master. Base on her lesson plan, she made sure that the activities she will carry out to the class will suit the students’ abilities and learning styles. She made me realize that is important to know that the best planned lesson is worthless if interesting delivery procedures, along with good classroom management techniques, are not in evidence.

Preparing Lesson Plan and Materials

With the aim of the curriculum, students must gain an optimum learning that provides holistic and empowering solutions to the students who experience challenges in learning especially in learning the English language. My mentor prepared her teaching media ahead of time. She made used of technology as her teaching aids. She used the LCD projector and speaker to present the video as her motivation and it serves as the bridge to the main lesson. However, she made a balance between teaching students and using technology to make sure that the use of technology is to aid and enhance the lesson, not the key component of the lesson. She also made use of the whiteboards like writing examples for the students to effectively understand the lesson.

Teaching in Class

My mentor, Bu Aulia, really tried to follow her lesson plan in teaching Bahasa Inggris to her Grade X students. She started the class by establishing a positive classroom environment through greeting and asking the students how are they. She made use of technology as her teaching media to aid and enhance her lesson and for the students’ to enjoy and at the same time to learn effectively. She presented a video to her students to start with a highly motivating activity and then building the lesson upon prior student knowledge.

Furthermore, the class discussion was interactive since the teacher as well as the students was involved in the process. There was an active participation of the students through giving examples and writing it on the board. It was also easier for the students to learn every detail of the lesson because the teacher made sure that there were translations in every English sentence in her presentation.

Measurement and Evaluation

From my observation, the teacher made use of formative assessment before instruction, to find out where students are, and during instruction, to find out how they are progressing. Also, at the end of the discussion, the teacher measure and evaluate the students’ understanding through a paper and pencil test. If the students failed to understand the lesson, teacher Aulia will give a remedial instruction for the students.
