Teaching Methods

Teaching Methods

SMK 3 teachers are using varied teaching methods and strategies to facilitate the learning process of the students and to meet their needs. One or two methods of instruction may not necessarily adequately challenge all of the students in the class. Therefore, there is a need to incorporate enough methodologies and instructional strategies to teach to the multiple levels of existing student skills. The teaching methods used by the teachers are as follows:

  • Discussion, direct learning with student centered approach, Demonstration, Tour, PBL (Problem Based Learning), Project Based Learning, Discovery, and Inquiry based learning.

The teachers cultivate the lessons in a sense of manner in instruction that successfully challenge every student to participate in the discussion.

Learning Materials and Motivation

Learning materials is an important aspect in the teaching and learning process. It is not just important for the teachers to help them in transmitting knowledge but they can significantly increase student achievement by supporting student learning.

SMK 3 uses learning materials such as textbooks, enrichment module, whiteboards, LCD projectors and materials made by teachers such as worksheets and any authentic materials. Moreover, the school also uses multimedia since it has readily available projectors, speakers and microphones that could be a really great aid for a classroom instruction. Students prefer technology because they believe that it makes learning more interesting and fun.

Sources of Learning and Technology

The sources of learning used by the teachers and the students in SMK 3 include traditional resources such as textbooks, module, dictionary, reference and workbooks which are available in their library. They are also embracing and integrating technology as one of the sources of learning. They have computer laboratory wherein they can use computer software and internet to find information and references, videos, music, and any resources which can help the students to learn effectively. They have other facilities and equipment which can be used to aid in the learning process by allowing the student to explore the knowledge independently. These learning resources are of great help in order to achieve an effective teaching and learning process.

Authentic Assessment

Curriculum 2013 requires teachers to apply authentic assessment as a method of educational measurement. Thus, teachers of SMK 3 use authentic assessment as an evaluation process involving multiple forms of student’s performance on instructionally-classroom activities. It has four aspects of assessment, namely aspects of knowledge, aspects of skills, aspects of attitude, and behaviour. This is based on government regulations from the Ministry of National Education.

One of the concrete evidences of this authentic assessment is the hand-made crafts made by the students. It is exhibited in the hallway of the school to display the creativity of the students. This assessment contributes to the development of the effective classroom measurement. It encourages students to be more active and helps teacher reflect on their teaching and improve the instruction.
